Independent photographers make their living in various ways. Some do freelance assignment work, some sell prints and some license the use of their images to others. Many of us do all these things. Vital to our livelihood is the concept of copyright. The US government has established the rights of photographers and other creators to control the reproduction of their work. To put teeth into copyright law, the Congress has specified costly penalties for violation of copyright.
